Let me start with giving some background on how your mind works. Our subconscious mind does not process negatives. What exactly does that mean? What if I said to you “Don’t think of a blue tree.” What is the first thing you pictured in your head? A blue tree. And why did you think of a blue tree? Because your subconscious mind only sees images and as a result it can not not see something. Sure you may have created an image of a blue tree with a red circle with a slash through the center (like a no smoking sign) over the image of the blue tree, however you still pictured the blue tree. This is an important communication tool to understand when communicating with others because in the very sentence: ”Don’t forget to pick up the milk.” you are actually saying on a subconscious level “Forget to pick up the milk.” How can this applied to your day to day life? Always state your statements in the positive. Instead of saying “Don’t forget to pick up the milk.” Say “Remember to pick up the milk.” By making this one change in your communication, you will be in the driver’s seat of the bus in relation of the results you get with others. You can apply this in your life by observing yourself for a while, and listen for when you use the words: can’t, won’t, don’t etc in a sentence. When you catch yourself stating something in the negative, change that statement into the positive. For example: “Don’t forget your cell phone.” Say instead “Remember your cell phone.” Have fun with it, be easy on yourself, and see what happens.
